No. 16 Sandburg Men’s Soccer Knocks Off No. 3 Morton to Go to 5-0

GALESBURG — In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, the No. 16 Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team emerged with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Morton Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field.

It’s the highest-ranked team ever defeated by the Chargers (5-0 overall, 3-0 Region), who remained unbeaten and avenged a loss to the Panthers (4-2, 1-2) in last spring’s Region IV tournament semifinals.

The game was scoreless until the 71st minute, when Sandburg was awarded a penalty kick after Jean Forestal (Ocoee, Fla./Ocoee) was taken down in the box. The PK attempt by Guylberson Camille (Key West, Fla./Key West) was stopped, but Pedronel Herrera (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Claret) was on the right side to tap in the rebound for a 1-0 Chargers lead.

Sandburg added insurance in the 77th minute as Forestal found Camille near the top of the box. Camille calmly evaded a pair of defenders before sending a pass to Forestal streaking toward the net for his seventh goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Morton cut the lead in half in the 85th minute on a goal from Amed Bamba, but the Chargers were able to close out the victory.

Sandburg keeper Benjamin Hilton (West Sussex, England/Crawley Town Academy) saved five of six Panthers shots on goal.
